Men have worn corsets from time immemorial, but until the 19th century these were probably all made to measure, and were not advertised publicly. However in the 19th century, as techniques for mass production were developed, advertisements for ‘off the peg’ garments began to appear in the popular press.

In the 20th century a number of men's girdles were advertised in men's magazines. These were usually rather unattractive garments, but must have been sold in quite substantial numbers. Towards the end of the century ‘compression garments’ for sportsmen began to appear, and today they are often worn by men taking part in active sports. It is claimed that they help to guard against injuries, and improve stamina by damping out supposedly harmful muscle vibrations. These are basically relatively lightweight LLPGs, and often have pockets to hold padding.

A number of costume girdles, which claim to improve the man's appearance, are still available, mostly from Continental manufacturers.
