Hosiery 101Advanced modern shapewear |
About 1995 someone developed an improved style of control brief pantyhose. Presumably they licensed the new design to the major manufacturers (or sold them the new machinery), as most of them came out with very similar products within a short time. Previously the brief of control brief tights had simply been an elastic bag which smoothed and flattened the posterior, whereas the new brief incorporated diagonal bands under the tail which was supposed to lift it without flattening it, and a reinforced tummy panel to flatten the tummy. Each manufacturer devised their own catchy name for the garment:
Several of the hosiery manufacturers also had the bright idea of selling these garments without legs, as a shaper panty. They are otherwise almost identical with the original garments. Despite the claims of the advertisers, and the before and after curves drawn optimistically on the ads (as in the second illustration), it is not obvious that the performance of this new design is significantly better than that of the older 'body toner' style of pantyhose. In about 2002 Playtex introduced their Second Skin shaper panty. This is a very similar garment made from a slightly heavier elasticised microfibre. It incorporates the same lifting and shaping bands, but is substantially firmer and more robust. It is a comfortable, but very effective garment, and at $A25 it is very good value.
The illustration on the right is from an advertising leaflet. The interior of the leaflet goes on to explain the scientific wonders of the construction of the garment in great detail. Click to view a larger image |
