Early kneehigh stockings
The Home magazine 2.7.1934 |
Most stocking enthusiasts despise ‘Knee-highs’as a diabolical modern invention. I was very surprised to find this advertisement in the July 1934 issue of The Home magazine. Even more surprising for 1934 is the clearly implied message that you could not get the required smooth line if you were wearing a corset or girdle. If she is not wearing a girdle, the model must have an uncommonly good figure, but it does look as if she may be braless. The blurb states:
The UNBROKEN LINE
To achieve this . . .
Prestige offer a wonderful new service . . . sheer stockings just to the knee. . .
Today's gown demands perfect flow, unimpaired by any blemish in its smoothness. Only the most carefully chosen underthings are possible; but here the new Prestige form-fitting silken undies are meeting the demand of the most fastidious. And now, the new Prestige Luxury "Nee-hi" stockings, which need no suspenders, eliminate the last worrisome obtrusion and make possible the perfect unbroken line.
This evening sheer eliminates garter and suspender problems. It incorporates a soft elastic band which, while not gripping like the old-fashioned garter, holds the stocking lightly but firmly below the knee. |
